MEAT FOR VEGETARIANS

Mushrooms are rich in essential vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin D, riboflavin and selenium. They are one of the highest antioxidant foods on the market. Mushrooms contain a unique bundle of protein, carbohydrates and fibre, all in a tasty little package.

Low in fat, sodium and kilojoules, mushrooms are also naturally gluten free, help keep blood glucose levels normal and have a very low GI – so they are delicious option for people with diabetes or following a gluten-free diet.

Mushrooms are the sixth most valuable horticultural crop grown in Australia with 80% of Australian households regularly purchasing fresh mushrooms.

Nutritional Information

Mushrooms are naturally low in sodium, fat, cholesterol, and calories and have often been referred to as "functional foods."

As well as providing basic nutrition, they help prevent chronic disease due to the presence of antioxidants and beneficial dietary fibres such as chitin and beta-glucans.

One cup of chopped or sliced raw white mushrooms contains:

  • 15 calories

  • 0 grams of fat

  • 2.2 grams of protein

  • 2.3 grams of carbohydrate, including 0.7 grams of fibre and 1.4 grams of sugar
